The 1978 NCAA Division I-AA football season, part of college football in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision level, began in August 1978, and concluded with the National Championship Game of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on December 16, 1978, at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas. In the first ever season of Division I-AA football after these teams split away from the Division I University Division after the 1977 season. The Florida A&M Rattlers won their first I-AA championship, defeating Massachusetts Minutemen by a final score of 35−28. As of 2014, Florida A&M remains the only team from an HBCU to either make it to or win the I-AA/FCS national championship game. ==Conference changes and new programs==
